Hawaiis State Flower

We all have images of Hawaiian flowers – most of them are linked to the vibrant chains of flowers which are placed around peoples necks on films we have seen.  But there is more to Hawaiian flower than that, including Hawaiis state flower, a rather stunning example of the flora which can be seen when visiting the islands!

has a very varied climate and as a result the fauna and flora which grows naturally is very varied.  The volcanoes affect the nutrients in the soil and therefore allow the growth of plants which cannot be found anywhere else in the world.  As a result of these rare climates there is a Hawaiian preservation where foreign plants are removed in the fear that they will stifle the growth of some of hawaiis prized species.

Hawaiis state flower is the Hibiscus These flowers are native to warm temperature, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. The leaves are alternate, and ovate to lanceolate. The flowers are typically large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped with five or more petals, ranging from white to pink, red, purple or yellow, and from four to five centimeters in width. The hibiscus became Hawaiis state flowers back in the 1920s.  The hibiscus comes from the family Malvaceae which has around two hundred species of flowering plants.  Hawaiis state flower was only defined by species until 1988.  Until 1988 any of the colours of the hibiscus were considered to be hawaiis state flower.  However, in 1988 it was agreed that the yellow flower hibiscus would be hawaiis state flower.  Following this decision there was an amendment made to the Revised Statutes that stated that the yellow flower hibiscus would be hawaiis state flower and it also allowed for the different coloured hibiscus to represent the different islands of Hawaii.
