The flowers are typically large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped with five or more petals, ranging from white to pink, red, purple or yellow, and from four to five centimeters in width. The hibiscus became Hawaiis state flowers back in the 1920s. The hibiscus comes from the family Malvaceae which has around two hundred species of flowering plants. Hawaiis state flower was only defined by species until 1988. Until 1988 any of the colours of the hibiscus were considered to be hawaiis state flower. However, in 1988 it was agreed that the yellow flower hibiscus would be hawaiis state flower. Following this decision there was an amendment made to the Revised Statutes that stated that the yellow flower hibiscus would be hawaiis state flower and it also allowed for the different coloured hibiscus to represent the different islands of Hawaii.
